Steam Machine in India: Price and How to Get One

Steam Machine in India: Price and How to Get One

Quick answer: the Steam Machine isn’t sold in India, and the 512GB lands at about ₹1,30,000 at Valve’s $1,049 price. Valve sells it on its Steam store and Amazon US lists it for more. For a controller, the HORIPAD for Steam is about ₹10,800 on Amazon.in.

The Steam Machine is Valve’s small cube PC that boots into SteamOS like a console, and if you want a Steam Machine in India, you’ll be bringing it in from abroad. Valve sells it on its own Steam store in a list of countries, and India isn’t one of them yet.

It’s still very much possible to get one. Below is what it costs here, the two ways to buy it, the new Steam Controller that pairs with it, an easy Steam controller you can order from Amazon.in today, and what I’d buy instead. My honest view up front: an Indian-built PC gives you more for the money, but nothing else is this small, this quiet and this console-like.

Steam Machine price in India

Valve sells the 512GB Steam Machine for $1,049 and the 2TB for $1,349, and adding the Steam Controller costs $79 more. At about ₹94.5 to the dollar the 512GB is roughly ₹99,100. Personal imports pay about 31% in duty and IGST, which brings it to around ₹1,30,000. The 2TB works out to about ₹1,67,000 by the same maths.

Amazon US listings for the 512GB are priced well above Valve’s, from about $1,500, which is roughly ₹1,85,000 with duty. Amazon US adds that duty to the checkout total. Indian importer stores have listed it at about ₹1,75,000 with a controller.

Valve Steam Machine

The neatest living-room PC you can buy. In India, the price is the hard part.

Pros

  • Very quiet: PCGamesN measured the fan under 35 dB
  • About 15 cm on each side, so it sits next to a TV like a console
  • SteamOS boots straight into a console-style interface
  • User-upgradeable SSD plus a microSD slot
  • Built-in radio for the Steam Controller

Cons

  • 8 GB of video memory limits 4K and ray tracing
  • Anti-cheat multiplayer like Fortnite and Apex won’t run on SteamOS
  • HDMI 2.0, not 2.1
  • A PC built in India gives more speed for the money

Inside is a six-core Zen 4 CPU running up to 4.8 GHz, an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units and 8 GB of GDDR6, and 16 GB of DDR5. Around the back you get HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C, four USB-A ports and gigabit Ethernet, plus Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Digital Foundry called it beautiful hardware, and it really is a tidy little box at 2.6 kg.

Performance is console-class. Digital Foundry placed the GPU between a Radeon RX 6600 and an RX 7600, and the 8 GB of video memory is what holds it back. PC Gamer saw Cyberpunk at 16 fps at 1440p with medium ray tracing, so 4K needs FSR upscaling and frame generation. At 1080p to 1440p without ray tracing, it’s comfortable.

Reviews split on value more than on the hardware. PC Gamer scored it 62/100 and called it an expensive curio, pointing to RTX 5060 PCs under $1,000 and the $899 PS5 Pro. IGN’s reviewer called it the best living-room PC they had used. Both are fair. If you want a silent box under the TV that behaves like a console and plays your Steam library, this is it.

Steam Controller in India

Valve also makes a new Steam Controller, priced at $99. That’s about ₹9,400, and roughly ₹12,300 once duty is added on an import. It isn’t sold in India either, and you don’t need it to use a Steam Machine. Any controller that works with Steam will do. But it’s the best pad for Steam games on a TV.

Valve Steam Controller

Trackpads and gyro make it the best way to play mouse-heavy Steam games from a sofa.

Pros

  • Two haptic trackpads and gyro give mouse-like control
  • Magnetic TMR thumbsticks
  • Huge battery life: Gamers Nexus ran it about 73 hours
  • Engadget scored it 90/100
  • Standard Torx screws and a removable battery tray

Cons

  • Built around Steam, so Xbox PC and Game Pass games are awkward
  • Large, and some reviewers found it uncomfortable
  • No adaptive triggers

It has two haptic trackpads, gyro with Grip Sense, HD rumble, rear buttons and magnetic thumbsticks that should hold up well over time. A small Puck charges it and doubles as the 2.4 GHz wireless receiver, and it also works over Bluetooth or a USB-C cable. Valve claims 35 hours or more on a charge, and Gamers Nexus ran it for about 73 hours without finishing the test. It weighs 292 g.

Charging is easy in India. The Puck takes power over USB-C, so any 5 V USB-C phone charger works and there’s no plug question at all. Valve sells it for $99, so compare any listing with that price before you pay. Non-Steam games need to be added to Steam first, and if you mostly play Game Pass, an Xbox pad is the simpler choice.

Hori HORIPAD Wireless for Steam

The easy Steam controller to buy in India: it’s on Amazon.in, and the US listing ships here too.

Pros

  • On Amazon.in, delivered in a few days
  • The Amazon US listing ships to India and costs less with duty
  • Made by Hori, a long-established controller maker
  • Wireless and designed for Steam

Cons

  • Few published reviews, so read the listing’s spec section
  • The Amazon.in price is about ₹3,400 above an Amazon US order

Hori is a long-established controller maker, and this pad is built for Steam. It’s about ₹10,800 on Amazon.in. The Amazon US listing is $59.99 and ships to India, which comes to about ₹7,400 with duty in the checkout total. If you can wait 10 to 15 days, the US order is the cheaper way. Either way, read the spec section on the listing for battery and connection details before you buy.

How to buy a Steam Machine in India

Option 1: Amazon US

I order a lot from Amazon US, and this is how it goes:

  1. Set your delivery address on Amazon.com to your Indian address. The product page then tells you straight away whether that listing ships to India.
  2. Compare the price with Valve’s $1,049 for the 512GB or $1,349 for the 2TB, and pick the offer closest to it.
  3. At checkout, Amazon adds shipping and an import fee deposit. The total on that screen is what you pay.
  4. When the parcel reaches India, the courier sends an SMS and an email with a KYC link. On my orders that was Aramex. Upload your Aadhaar or PAN and that step is done.
  5. The box reaches your door in about 10 to 15 days from the order.

If the US page says it can’t ship to your address, Option 2 is the way to go. The full process is in how I buy gadgets from Amazon US.

Option 2: Valve’s Steam store

Valve sells the Steam Machine on its Steam store in the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. It sells in batches: you reserve one on a Steam account in that region, Valve emails you when your turn comes, and you have 72 hours to pay. If you have family in one of those countries, they can reserve and buy one at Valve’s price and bring it home when they visit. This is the cheapest way to get one.

For the controller, it’s simpler. The HORIPAD for Steam is on Amazon.in, and Valve’s own Steam Controller can be added to a Steam store order for $79.

Setting it up in India

Power is easy. The Steam Machine has a built-in power supply rated 110 to 240 V, so India’s 230 V is fine, and Gigazine measured about 105 W under heavy load. The mains cable is detachable, so if the plug doesn’t fit your socket, swap in an Indian-standard lead.

Sign in with your usual Steam account and your library is there. Steam supports rupee pricing, so the store shows Indian prices. For the TV, HDMI 2.0 handles 4K at 60 Hz, and if the router is nearby I’d use the Ethernet port for big downloads. The SSD is user-upgradeable and there’s a microSD slot for extra games.

Any controller that works with Steam will do. If you already have an Xbox pad, use it. My Xbox controller picks are all easy to buy here.

Alternatives you can buy in India

A desktop PC built here is the obvious rival. Reviewers pointed to RTX 5060-class builds as better value, and TechEnclave members reckon a mid-range desktop or console saves ₹40,000 to ₹50,000. If you’ve never built one, my guide on how to build a gaming PC walks through it, and my 1440p graphics card picks cover the GPU.

If you want Steam both on the TV and in your hands, a Steam Deck OLED with a USB-C dock does both, at about ₹1,00,000 on Amazon.in. The ROG Xbox Ally X, sold officially in India and launched at ₹1,14,990, does the same with Windows. I compare the two in Steam Deck OLED vs ROG Xbox Ally, and my full ranking is in best handheld gaming consoles in India.

Warranty and support

Valve gives the Steam Machine a one-year warranty tied to the country it was bought in, and it has no service centre in India. An Amazon-fulfilled order still gets Amazon’s normal return window. The SSD is user-upgradeable, and the Steam Controller uses standard Torx screws with parts sold by iFixit, so simple fixes are doable at home.

Verdict

The Steam Machine is a lovely piece of hardware: silent, small and as easy as a console. In India it makes the most sense if someone in your family can buy it at Valve’s $1,049 and bring it home. At Amazon US or importer prices, I’d build a PC instead, or buy a Steam Deck and a dock. Whichever you pick, the HORIPAD for Steam from Amazon.in is the quickest controller to sort out, and the Steam Controller is worth it at Valve’s price.
