Google TV Streamer in India: Price, Where to Buy and Setup

Google TV Streamer in India: Price, Where to Buy and Setup

Quick answer: the Google TV Streamer costs about ₹14,000 on Amazon.in, less than importing it. It works in India with your normal Google account, and it’s the box I’d tell most people to buy.

The Google TV Streamer is the streaming box I recommend to most people who ask me. It plays Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, has Gigabit Ethernet built in, and runs Android 14 for TV, so it’s the Google box that gets new features first. For about ₹14,000 it does more than boxes that cost twice as much.

Google hasn’t run an official India launch for it, but Amazon.in lists it, and that’s where I’d buy one. Below is what it costs here, why Amazon.in beats an import on this one, how to set it up, and what happened to the Chromecast with Google TV it replaced.

Google TV Streamer price in India

Google sells the Streamer for $149.99 in the US, which is $50 more than it cost at launch. At about ₹94.5 to the dollar that’s roughly ₹14,200 before any duty. A personal import pays about 31% in customs duty and IGST on top, so an Amazon US order lands at around ₹18,600. Amazon.in lists the same box at about ₹14,000 against an M.R.P. of ₹14,999. That makes the Indian listing roughly ₹4,500 cheaper, and it arrives in days instead of two weeks.

Google TV Streamer

The best value streaming box in India: every HDR format, wired Ethernet and Google’s newest TV software for about ₹14,000.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG at up to 4K 60 fps
  • Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 2.1
  • 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage
  • Thread border router and Matter support for a smart home
  • Press the button on the back of the box and the remote rings

Cons

  • No DTS or TrueHD passthrough
  • Wi-Fi tops out at Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac)
  • No USB port for a hard drive; the USB-C port is for power
  • Costs $50 more than it did at launch

This is the box that covers the most TVs. LG and Sony sets want Dolby Vision, Samsung sets want HDR10+, and the Streamer does both, plus HDR10 and HLG. That alone puts it ahead of the Nvidia Shield for a lot of homes. With 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, it has room for a full set of apps, and Google’s software on it is the smoothest I’ve used on Android.

For sound it handles Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos, so a soundbar on your TV’s eARC port gets Atmos from Netflix and Prime Video. What it doesn’t list is DTS or TrueHD passthrough. If you play Blu-ray rips through an AV receiver, that’s the one reason to spend more on a Shield.

Two small things I like. The remote has a button you can set to whatever you use most, and when the remote vanishes into the sofa, a press on the back of the Streamer makes it ring. The box is also a Thread border router with Matter support, so Thread and Matter gadgets can connect through it. If you’re building out a smart home with plugs like the ones in my smart plug picks, look for Matter on the box and the Streamer can be part of that setup.

What happened to the Chromecast with Google TV

Google built the Streamer to replace the Chromecast with Google TV. When the Streamer launched, Google said it would sell the remaining Chromecasts and then stop, and it has: both the 4K and HD models are discontinued. Google says the Chromecast will keep getting updates, but it won’t get the Android 14 for TV release the Streamer runs.

If you already own one, keep using it. The picture formats are the same as the Streamer’s. If you’re shopping now, the maths is simple: the Streamer costs about ₹14,000 on Amazon.in and adds built-in Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.1 and the newer software, so a Chromecast only makes sense at a much lower price.

Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

A good little stick, but buy it only if one turns up for well under ₹6,000.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG at up to 4K 60 fps
  • Passes Dolby audio through to a soundbar
  • Small enough to hide behind the TV
  • Still gets updates from Google

Cons

  • Discontinued, and listings are often priced above its worth
  • Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2
  • Ethernet only through a separate power adapter with a port
  • Won’t get Android 14 for TV

I liked the Chromecast a lot, and on a 4K TV it still looks as good as the Streamer. The trouble is price. Compare any Chromecast offer with the Streamer’s ₹14,000 first. If the gap is small, the Streamer is the better buy every time.

How to buy the Google TV Streamer in India

Option 1: Amazon.in

This is the route I’d take for this box. Amazon.in lists the Streamer at about ₹14,000, which is less than an import costs once duty is added. You get Indian delivery in a few days, an Indian invoice and Amazon’s normal return window. Open the listing, check the price and you’re done.

Option 2: Amazon US

I import a lot of my streaming gear, but for the Streamer I only use Amazon US to compare totals. If the Amazon.in price ever climbs above the US total, here’s how an order goes:

  1. Set your delivery address on Amazon.com to your Indian address. The product page then tells you right away whether that listing ships to India.
  2. Pick an offer at or near Google’s $149.99 list price.
  3. At checkout, Amazon adds shipping and an import fee deposit. The total on that screen is what you pay.
  4. When the parcel reaches India, the courier sends an SMS and an email with a KYC link. On my orders that was Aramex. Upload your Aadhaar or PAN and that step is done.
  5. The box reaches your door in about 10 to 15 days from the order.

If the US page says it can’t ship to your address, use the Amazon.in listing instead. I’ve written up the whole process inhow I buy gadgets from Amazon US.

Setting it up in India

Yes, the Google TV Streamer works in India, and setup takes a few minutes. Connect it to an HDMI port on your TV, power it from the USB-C adapter, and sign in with your usual Indian Google account. Your apps follow the country of that account, so the Play Store shows Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and JioHotstar as normal. Plex, Kodi and Stremio install the same way; my Kodi, Stremio and Nuvio guide covers those.

The Streamer is built for HDMI 2.1, so check the cable you plan to use is rated for it. My list of premium HDMI cables is a good place to start if yours is an old one. If you imported a US unit, read the label on the power adapter: if it says 100–240 V, a plain plug adapter is all you need for India’s 230 V sockets.

Use the Ethernet port if the router is anywhere near the TV, since the Wi-Fi is only Wi-Fi 5. A short Cat 8 Ethernet cable costs little and keeps 4K Dolby Vision streams steady. If the router is in another room, a better Wi-Fi router will do more than anything you change on the box.

Alternatives you can buy in India

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the step up, at about ₹37,000 from Amazon US with duty. It passes DTS:X, DTS-HD and TrueHD to a receiver and has two USB 3.0 ports, but it has no HDR10+. I’ve set the two side by side in Shield TV Pro vs Google TV Streamer.

The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is the budget choice at about ₹5,500 on Amazon.in. It has Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos and still allows sideloading. It’s slower than the Streamer and has no built-in Ethernet, but for a bedroom TV it’s plenty.

The Apple TV 4K costs ₹39,900 with an official India warranty. It has the same four HDR formats and much faster hardware, and it makes sense if your home runs on iPhones. It doesn’t allow sideloading.

Warranty and support

Google doesn’t sell the Streamer through its own India store, so Google’s warranty stays with the country it was first sold in. An Amazon.in order is covered by Amazon’s normal return window, so a faulty unit goes back the usual way. Software updates come from Google over the internet, wherever you bought the box.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Google TV Streamer work in India?

Yes. Sign in with an Indian Google account and you get the Indian Play Store, with Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and YouTube. A US unit works the same way and only needs a plug adapter.

What is the Google TV Streamer price in India?

About ₹14,000 on Amazon.in, against an M.R.P. of ₹14,999. Importing it from Amazon US at the $149.99 list price comes to about ₹18,600 with duty, so Amazon.in is the cheaper route.

Is the Google TV Streamer worth buying?

For most people, yes. It covers every HDR format, has wired Ethernet and runs the newest Google TV software. Skip it only if you need DTS or TrueHD passthrough or USB storage, in which case get the Shield TV Pro.

Is Google TV available in India?

Yes. The Google TV software works here with an Indian Google account, and the Streamer is the easiest way to add it to a TV that doesn’t have it. Any TV with an HDMI port will do.

Is the Chromecast with Google TV still sold in India?

Google has discontinued it, though Amazon.in still has a listing for the 4K model. The Streamer replaced it and adds Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.1 and Android 14 for TV, so buy a Chromecast only well under ₹6,000.

Does the Google TV Streamer support Dolby Vision and Atmos?

Yes to both, plus HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. Your TV needs to support the HDR format, and you need an Atmos soundbar or receiver for Atmos. My Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos guide lists every box’s formats.

Verdict

Buy the Google TV Streamer. At about ₹14,000 on Amazon.in it’s cheaper than importing, it plays every HDR format your TV might use, and it gets Google’s updates first. Pay more for the Shield TV Pro only if you have a receiver that decodes DTS-HD or TrueHD, and skip the Chromecast unless it’s going for well under ₹6,000.
