Best Streaming Device in India: 6 Boxes and Sticks Ranked

Best streaming device in India: 6 boxes and sticks ranked

Quick answer: the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the best streaming device in India for picture and sound. The Google TV Streamer is the best value at about ₹14,000 on Amazon.in, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is the best budget pick at about ₹5,500. Also in this guide: Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Cube, Chromecast with Google TV.

Most smart TVs sold in India come with slow software, a cramped app store and a remote that lags. A good streaming box fixes all three for the price of a dinner out. A great one also gets the most out of your TV’s Dolby Vision panel and your soundbar’s Atmos.

I’ve used all six devices on this page with Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and YouTube, and with Plex, Kodi and Stremio for my own files. The ranking is mine. Each pick says what it costs in India and where to buy it, because a few of the best boxes aren’t sold here officially. That’s less of a hurdle than it sounds.

1. Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Best overall. If I could keep only one box, it would be this one.

Pros

  • Passes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD and TrueHD to a receiver
  • Dolby Vision and HDR10 at 4K 60 fps
  • Gigabit Ethernet and two USB 3.0 ports
  • AI upscaling sharpens 1080p shows on a 4K TV

Cons

  • No HDR10+
  • Wi-Fi 5 and HDMI 2.0b on hardware from 2019
  • The most expensive box here after Apple’s

The Shield is the only box on this list that sends DTS:X, DTS-HD and TrueHD tracks to a receiver untouched. Add two USB 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet, and a hard drive full of Blu-ray rips plays without any fuss through Plex or Kodi. Nvidia’s AI upscaler also does a visible job on 1080p cricket streams and older shows.

Nvidia doesn’t sell it officially in India. It’s listed on Amazon.in, and Amazon US delivers it for about ₹37,000 with duty included at checkout. If your TV is a Samsung that only does HDR10+, pick the Google TV Streamer instead. More detail is in my Nvidia Shield TV Pro India guide.

2. Google TV Streamer

Best value. It covers more picture formats than the Shield for less than half the money.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG
  • Gigabit Ethernet, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage
  • Android 14 for TV, so it gets new features first
  • Thread border router and Matter for a smart home

Cons

  • No DTS or TrueHD passthrough
  • No USB port for a hard drive

This is the box I’d tell most people to buy. It does every HDR format a TV sold in India supports, it has a wired Ethernet port, and Google’s software is the smoothest I’ve used on Android. It replaced the Chromecast with Google TV, so it’s the one Google keeps updating.

It’s about ₹14,000 on Amazon.in, which works out cheaper than importing it once you add duty to the $149.99 US price. The only reason to pay more for the Shield is a receiver that decodes DTS-HD or TrueHD. Full notes are in my Google TV Streamer India guide.

3. Fire TV Stick 4K Plus

Best budget pick. Dolby Vision and Atmos for about ₹5,500, delivered in a day or two.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos
  • Wi-Fi 6
  • Fire OS, so sideloading still works
  • Amazon says it will keep updating the 4K Plus until 2030

Cons

  • Ethernet needs a separate adapter
  • No DTS or TrueHD passthrough
  • Much less powerful than the Shield or Google’s box

For Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar on a bedroom TV, this is all most people need. It handles Dolby Vision and HDR10+, plays Atmos to a soundbar, and the Alexa remote controls your TV’s power and volume too.

Check the name before you pay. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select looks almost the same and costs about ₹4,000, but it runs Amazon’s new Vega OS, which blocks sideloaded apps like Kodi and Stremio, and it has no Dolby Vision. I’ve compared the two in Fire TV Stick 4K Plus vs Select.

4. Apple TV 4K

Best for iPhone homes, and the only box here with an official India price.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG
  • A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 2.1
  • Official Apple warranty and service in India
  • AirPlay and the cleanest interface of the lot

Cons

  • ₹39,900 is seven times a Fire TV Stick
  • App Store only, so no sideloading
  • No DTS or TrueHD passthrough

The new Apple TV 4K is the fastest box here by a distance, with 128 GB of storage and a dedicated AV1 decoder. If your family already uses iPhones, AirPlay and Apple’s photo and music apps make it feel like part of the house.

Apple sells it in India at ₹39,900 through Apple, Amazon.in and the big electronics chains. If you live in Android apps or want Kodi, the Google TV Streamer does more for a third of the price. More in my Apple TV 4K India guide.

5. Fire TV Cube

Best hands-free. Talk to the TV without picking up the remote.

Pros

  • Hands-free Alexa through a built-in mic and speaker
  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG
  • HDMI input for a set-top box, plus Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E
  • Fire OS, so sideloading works

Cons

  • Picture and sound are no better than the much cheaper 4K Plus
  • No DTS or TrueHD passthrough
  • Only worth it if you’ll use Alexa hands-free

The Cube has nearly everything on paper: every HDR format, Atmos, Wi-Fi 6E, Ethernet, a USB port and an HDMI input. That input is handy if you still have a Tata Play or Airtel set-top box, because Alexa can switch to it by voice.

Amazon launched this Cube in India at ₹13,999, and it’s listed on Amazon.in. Buy it for hands-free Alexa and the HDMI input. If you only want better picture and sound, the Google TV Streamer is the better use of the money. My Fire TV Cube India guide has the rest.

6. Chromecast with Google TV (4K)

Buy it only at a fair price. Google no longer makes it.

Pros

  • Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG
  • Small enough to hide behind the TV
  • Still gets security updates

Cons

  • Discontinued, and listings are often priced above its worth
  • Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2; Ethernet needs a special power adapter
  • Won’t get Android 14 for TV

It was a lovely little stick and it still works well. But the Google TV Streamer replaced it, and the Streamer costs about the same on Amazon.in while adding Ethernet and newer software. Buy a Chromecast only if one turns up for well under ₹6,000.

Buying Guide

Start with your TV

A box can only send what your TV understands. Look up your TV’s model number and check whether it does Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or both. LG, Sony and most TCL and Xiaomi TVs sold in India do Dolby Vision. Samsung skips Dolby Vision and uses HDR10+, so a Samsung owner should pick the Google TV Streamer or a Fire TV Stick 4K Plus over the Shield. I’ve listed every box’s formats in my Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Atmos guide.

Check your sound setup

Atmos works on every box here, as long as your soundbar or receiver is plugged into the TV’s HDMI eARC or ARC port. DTS:X, DTS-HD and TrueHD only matter if you own an AV receiver and play files ripped from Blu-ray discs. If that’s you, the Shield is the only real option. If you’re still shopping for speakers, start with my budget soundbar picks.

Pick software for the apps you use

Every box runs Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, SonyLIV, ZEE5 and YouTube. The difference shows up with apps outside the store. Android TV, Google TV and Fire OS let you sideload, so Kodi, Stremio and Nuvio install fine. Apple’s tvOS and Amazon’s new Vega OS on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select don’t allow it. My Kodi, Stremio and Nuvio guide matches each app to the right box.

Use a wired connection when you can

4K Dolby Vision streams need a steady 25 Mbps or more. A box on Ethernet never buffers when the neighbour’s Wi-Fi gets busy. The Shield, Google TV Streamer, Apple TV and Cube all have a port. If your router sits far from the TV, a better Wi-Fi router or a range extender helps more than a faster box.

Amazon.in or Amazon US

Five of these six have an Amazon.in page, and for most of them that’s the quickest buy. The Shield is the one I usually order from Amazon US. The checkout total includes shipping and duty, the courier sends a KYC link once the parcel lands, and it reaches me in about 10 to 15 days. I’ve written up every step in how I buy gadgets from Amazon US.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best streaming device in India?

The Nvidia Shield TV Pro, if you have a receiver or a big media library. For everyone else, the Google TV Streamer at about ₹14,000 is the best buy. On a tight budget, get the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus.

Which is the best 4K streaming device in India?

All six on this page stream in 4K. The Google TV Streamer gives you the widest HDR support for the money. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is the cheapest 4K device I’d recommend.

What is a good Fire TV Stick alternative in India?

The Google TV Streamer. It’s faster, has built-in Ethernet and runs Google TV, which a lot of people find easier than Amazon’s ad-heavy home screen. If you want something more powerful still, look at the Shield TV Pro.

Is there a good streaming device under ₹3,000?

Yes, if your TV is Full HD. The Fire TV Stick HD costs about ₹3,000 and often drops lower in sales. For a 4K TV, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select at about ₹4,000 is the cheapest 4K option, as long as you don’t need sideloading.

Can I use a streaming device on a normal TV?

Yes. Any TV with an HDMI port works, smart or not. The device brings the apps, and the TV just shows the picture. A Fire TV Stick HD is the right match for an older 1080p TV.

Do streaming devices bought from Amazon US work in India?

Yes. Indian apps show up because the app store follows your account’s country, not the box’s. You only need a plug adapter for the US power brick.

Verdict

Buy the Google TV Streamer if you want one box that does everything well for a sensible price. Spend more on the Shield TV Pro only if you have a receiver or a hard drive full of films. Pick the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus for a second TV or a tight budget, and the Apple TV 4K if your home runs on iPhones. If you’re torn between the top two, read Shield TV Pro vs Google TV Streamer.
