Kindle Scribe in India: Price, Which Model and How to Buy

Kindle Scribe in India: Price, Which Model and How to Buy

Quick answer: the Kindle Scribe isn’t sold on Amazon.in, but it lands at about ₹62,000 from Amazon US. Buy the plain 32 GB Scribe unless you need colour; the Scribe Colorsoft comes to about ₹78,000.

The Kindle Scribe in India comes one way: from Amazon US, delivered to your door with the duty already paid at checkout. I think it’s the best e-ink tablet you can get here for reading and writing together, and the import is a routine order once you’ve done it.

There are now two Scribes worth buying, the plain Scribe and the Scribe Colorsoft. Below is what each costs here, which one I’d pick, how the order goes, how to set it up with your Kindle account, and what to buy on Amazon.in if you’d rather not import.

Kindle Scribe price in India

Amazon lists the 32 GB Kindle Scribe with a front light at $499.99 on Amazon US. At about ₹94.5 to the dollar that’s roughly ₹47,200. Personal imports pay about 31% in customs duty and IGST, which brings it to around ₹62,000. Amazon US adds that duty to the checkout total, so nothing extra is collected at your door. The Scribe Colorsoft is $629.99 for 32 GB and $679.99 for 64 GB, which works out to about ₹78,000 and ₹84,000.

Some price sites in India still show an expected price near ₹34,000. That figure is for the old 10.2-inch Scribe and doesn’t apply to the current model.

Kindle Scribe

The one I’d buy. A big, light Kindle you can write on, with the whole Kindle store behind it.

Pros

  • 11-inch glare-free screen with a front light
  • 400 g and 5.4 mm thick
  • Writing and page turns up to 40% faster than the last Scribe, per Amazon
  • Notebooks with AI summaries and handwriting search
  • Google Drive and OneDrive support

Cons

  • Black and white only
  • Expert Reviews found the note-taking software basic
  • Several Scribe variants with similar names

The Scribe is a large Kindle first and a notebook second, and that’s the right way round for most people. The 11-inch screen is big enough for most PDFs, and you get the Kindle store, Send to Kindle and USB transfer for your own files. The Premium Pen attaches magnetically and never needs charging.

Check the variant before you pay. Amazon also sells a cheaper Scribe without a front light, and the names look alike. The listing I link to is the 32 GB model with the front light, which is the one I’d buy. The front light is what makes it usable for reading at night. The previous-generation 16 GB Scribe is also on Amazon US at $399.99. It’s the older design, so I’d only take it for the lower price.

Kindle Scribe Colorsoft

Buy it only if colour is part of how you work. For everyone else the plain Scribe is the better deal.

Pros

  • 11-inch Kaleido 3 colour screen, 300 ppi in black and white
  • 10 pen colours and 5 highlighter colours
  • Passive pen in the box with an eraser end
  • Colour survives export to PDF, per Stark Insider

Cons

  • Colour is soft at 150 ppi
  • Large colour pages take 1 to 2 seconds to turn
  • No water resistance
  • About ₹16,000 more than the plain Scribe after duty

The Colorsoft adds a colour layer to the same 11-inch idea. It has a 2 GHz quad-core chip, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1 and USB-C, and storage is fixed at 32 GB or 64 GB when you buy. Amazon rates the battery at up to 8 weeks of reading or 2 weeks of writing; Stark Insider got two to three weeks of mixed use.

Both big reviews liked the hardware and wanted better software. Expert Reviews measured the pen at around Amazon’s 12 ms claim but found you can’t zoom into notebook pages. Stark Insider gave it 4.5 out of 5 and called it the best Kindle Amazon has made, and also said it’s rarely worth full price. I agree. Wait for an Amazon US sale if you can.

How to buy the Kindle Scribe in India

Option 1: Amazon US

I order most of my gadgets from the US this way. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Set your delivery address on Amazon.com to your Indian address. The product page then tells you right away whether that listing ships to India.
  2. Open the variant you want and read the title: 32 GB, with front light, or Colorsoft. Pick the offer sold by Amazon.com at the list price.
  3. At checkout, Amazon adds shipping and an import fee deposit. The total on that screen is what you pay.
  4. When the parcel reaches India, the courier sends an SMS and an email with a KYC link. On my orders that was Aramex. Upload your Aadhaar or PAN and that step is done.
  5. The Scribe reaches your door in about 10 to 15 days from the order.

Option 2: an Amazon.in alternative

If the US page says it can’t ship to your address, the reMarkable Paper Pro on Amazon.in is the closest thing you can order here. reMarkable India sells it with the Marker Plus pen for about ₹65,000, and it arrives in a few days. It writes better than the Scribe and reads worse, because it has no bookstore. I’ve put the two side by side in Kindle Scribe vs reMarkable Paper Pro.

Setting it up in India

A Scribe registers to your Amazon account like any Kindle. Sign in with the account you already use, and your Kindle library, highlights and reading position follow it. The Kindle store you see depends on the country set on that account, so check the country in your Amazon account settings before you sign in on the Scribe.

For PDFs and notes from college or work, use Send to Kindle, or plug it into a laptop and copy files over USB. Notebooks export to Google Drive and OneDrive. The Scribe connects over Wi-Fi and charges over USB-C, so the charger you use for your phone works.

It’s 5.4 mm thick and 400 g, so it fits in any laptop bag. If you’re carrying it to class every day, one of my laptop backpack picks has room for it next to a laptop.

Alternatives you can buy in India

The reMarkable Paper Pro is the obvious one. It’s on Amazon.in for about ₹65,000, has an 11.8-inch colour screen and, by most reviews, the best writing feel of any e-ink tablet. Pick it if you write more than you read.

The Kobo Libra Colour is the cheap way to read in colour. It’s about ₹22,800 on Amazon.in, sold by Kobo India, and it’s waterproof with page-turn buttons. It’s a 7-inch reader, not a notebook. I cover it with Amazon’s own colour reader in my Kindle Colorsoft India guide.

If you want to draw rather than write, an e-ink screen isn’t the right tool. A pen display from my drawing tablet picks or a convertible laptop with a stylus gives you full colour and proper art apps. For every e-ink option ranked, see my best e-ink tablet in India guide.

Warranty and support

Kindle warranty follows the country you buy in, so a Scribe from Amazon US carries the US terms shown on its listing. Read that line once before you pay. If an Indian seller matters to you, the reMarkable Paper Pro from reMarkable India is the one that has it.

About ₹62,000 delivered from Amazon US for the 32 GB model, from a $499.99 list price. The Scribe Colorsoft comes to about ₹78,000.

Yes. It runs on Wi-Fi and signs in with your Amazon account like any Kindle. Your library follows your account, and the store follows your account’s country setting.

Not on Amazon.in. Amazon US lists it at $629.99 for 32 GB and $679.99 for 64 GB, and both ship with duty added to the checkout total.

Does the Kindle Scribe have a front light?

The 32 GB model I link to does. Amazon also sells a cheaper version without one, so read the listing title before you order.

Verdict

Buy the plain Kindle Scribe. It’s the best mix of reading and writing on e-ink, and at about ₹62,000 delivered it costs less than the reMarkable Paper Pro on Amazon.in. Pay for the Scribe Colorsoft only if colour highlights are part of how you work. If you’d rather order in India and mostly write, get the Paper Pro.
