Quick answer: electronics you order from the USA for yourself pay about 31% in duty and IGST in India. That’s 10% basic customs duty, a 10% surcharge on that duty, and 18% IGST, and Amazon US adds it to the checkout total.
Custom duty on electronics from USA to India is simpler than most forum threads make it look. If you order a console, laptop, tablet or streaming box for your own use and it comes by courier, it’s charged as a personal import, and the total comes to about 31% of the value. I work this out before every Amazon US order, so the checkout total never surprises me.
This page shows where the 31% comes from, a worked example line by line, what it means for six real devices, and how the duty actually gets paid on an Amazon order. If you only want the shortcut: multiply the US price by about ₹124 per dollar and you’re close to what lands at your door.
How customs duty on electronics from the USA is worked out
Goods you import for personal use by post or courier go under one customs heading, 9804, whatever the gadget is. That heading has three parts, and each one stacks on the last:
- 10% basic customs duty on the value. After the last Budget cut, that’s half the old 20% rate.
- A 10% social welfare surcharge, charged on the basic duty only, so it works out to 1% of the value.
- 18% IGST, charged on the value plus the duty plus the surcharge.
Put together, that’s 30.98%, which I round to 31%. The value it’s charged on includes shipping, so a ₹2,000 shipping fee adds about ₹620 of duty. You’ll see older pages quoting 42% or more. Those were written before the basic rate came down and before IGST on consoles dropped from 28% to 18%.
Worked example: duty on a $500 gadget
Take anything that costs $500 in the US, which is roughly what a Switch 2 or a Kindle Scribe costs. At ₹94.5 to the dollar, and leaving shipping out to keep it clean, the duty works out like this:
| Step | How it’s worked out | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Value in rupees | $500 × 94.5 | ₹47,250 |
| Basic customs duty | 10% of ₹47,250 | ₹4,725 |
| Social welfare surcharge | 10% of ₹4,725 | ₹473 |
| IGST | 18% of ₹52,448 (value + duty + surcharge) | ₹9,441 |
| Total duty | ₹4,725 + ₹473 + ₹9,441 | ₹14,639, about 31% |
| Landed cost | ₹47,250 + ₹14,639 | About ₹61,900 |
That ₹14,639 is roughly what Amazon shows as the import fees deposit on a $500 order, give or take its shipping charge.
Import duty by device type
Because personal imports all sit under the same heading, a console, a laptop and an e-reader pay the same 31%. Here’s what that means for six devices people ask me about:
| Device | Type | US price | In rupees | Landed with duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Games console | $499.99 | About ₹47,200 | About ₹62,000 |
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB | Handheld gaming PC | $789 | About ₹74,600 | About ₹97,700 |
| Razer Blade 16 (RTX 5070 Ti) | Laptop | About $3,500 | About ₹3,30,800 | About ₹4,33,000 |
| Kindle Scribe | Tablet and e-reader | $499.99 | About ₹47,200 | About ₹62,000 |
| Nvidia Shield TV Pro | Streaming box | $299.99 | About ₹28,300 | About ₹37,000 |
| Meta Quest 3 | VR headset | $599.99 | About ₹56,700 | About ₹74,300 |
Import duty on a gaming console in India
A Switch 2 at $499.99 lands at about ₹62,000, and a Steam Deck OLED at $789 at about ₹97,700. Both are also on Amazon.in at close to those numbers, which is why I’d buy them locally. The sums for each are in my Nintendo Switch 2 price in India and Steam Deck price in India guides.
Import duty on a laptop from USA to India
Laptops pay the same personal-import rate, and there’s one extra rule: one laptop per courier shipment. That allowance is what lets a single laptop come in on an Amazon order with duty paid. If you want two, place two orders. A Razer Blade 16 at about $3,500 lands at roughly ₹4.3 lakh, and my Razer Blade price in India guide runs the numbers for all three sizes.
Import duty on a tablet in India
Tablets and e-readers are no different. The Kindle Scribe isn’t sold in India, so the $499.99 US price plus duty, about ₹62,000, is what it costs here. My Kindle Scribe in India guide covers which version to get.
Streaming boxes and VR headsets
Same 31% again. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro comes to about ₹37,000 from Amazon US, and a Meta Quest 3 to about ₹74,300. Both also have Amazon.in listings, so compare before you order.
Customs duty calculator: the quick way
You don’t need a calculator app. Convert the US price to rupees at the rate above, then multiply by 1.31 for the landed total. That’s about ₹124 for every dollar. A few round numbers to save you the sum:
- $100 lands at about ₹12,400
- $250 lands at about ₹30,900
- $500 lands at about ₹61,900
- $1,000 lands at about ₹1,23,800
- $2,000 lands at about ₹2,47,600
Add Amazon’s shipping charge to the dollar price first if you want to be exact. Amazon’s checkout will show its own figure, and that’s the one you pay.
Why Amazon’s figure can differ a little from yours
Two things move the number by a few hundred rupees. Customs charges duty on the value including shipping and insurance, so Amazon’s shipping fee raises the base. And customs converts dollars at its own notified exchange rate, which is close to the market rate but rarely identical. If your checkout deposit lands within a small margin of your ₹124-per-dollar estimate, everything is working as it should.
How the duty gets paid on an Amazon US order
This is the part people worry about, and it’s the easiest. Amazon US adds the duty to the checkout total as an import fees deposit, and its courier pays customs on your behalf. When the parcel reaches India, the courier (Aramex on my orders) sends an SMS and email with a KYC link. You upload Aadhaar or PAN, and the parcel arrives about 10 to 15 days after you ordered. On my orders nothing more was asked for at the door.
If an item turns up defective, damaged or wrong, Amazon refunds the import fees deposit along with the price when you return it within 30 days. Keep the invoice and order email until you’ve tested the device. The whole order process, step by step, is in how I buy gadgets from Amazon US.
Courier orders vs electronics in your luggage
Two sets of rules get mixed up a lot online. Everything above is about courier orders, which have no duty-free limit. Bringing electronics in your own suitcase falls under the baggage rules instead, with a duty-free allowance reported at ₹75,000. So the travel guides that talk about duty-free laptops are right for luggage, and the 31% is right for parcels.
Comparing import shops that quote their own prices with duty built in? I’ve put Amazon US next to Ubuy and Desertcart in this comparison.
Warranty and support
Paying duty doesn’t change the warranty: an imported device keeps the maker’s terms from the country it was bought in. Amazon’s 30-day return window covers anything Amazon fulfils, and the duty comes back with a return for a faulty item. Test everything in the first week and keep the box.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a duty-free limit on courier imports to India?
No. Courier imports pay duty from the first rupee. Only small postal parcels worth ₹1,000 or less are exempt.
Can I ship electronics from the USA to India?
Yes. Ordering on Amazon US with an Indian address is the simplest way, because duty is collected at checkout and the courier handles customs after a quick online KYC.
How much electronics can I take to India from the USA?
In your luggage, the baggage allowance covers goods up to a reported ₹75,000 duty-free. Anything you send by courier is a separate import and pays the personal-import rate of about 31%.
Can I buy a laptop in the US and bring it to India?
Yes. In your luggage it falls under the baggage allowance. By courier, one laptop per shipment comes in at the personal-import rate of about 31%.
What is the import duty on a gaming console in India?
About 31% as a personal import, so roughly ₹124 for every dollar of the US price. A $499.99 Switch 2 comes to about ₹62,000.
Is IGST on consoles still 28%?
No, it’s 18% now. Pages quoting 28%, or a 42% total, were written before the change.
Is the Amazon import fees deposit the same as customs duty?
It’s Amazon’s estimate of the duty and IGST, collected at checkout and paid to customs by its courier. On my orders it was the whole bill.
So: take the US price, multiply by about 124, compare it with Amazon.in, and buy wherever the total is lower. That’s the whole calculation.
